
The general conclusion from studies evaluating the accuracy of AI in IVF is that AI shows promising results in improving embryo evaluation, but there are ethical challenges to making AI use in IVF a widespread reality. Traditionally, scientists evaluate the traits of individual embryos to ensure the highest chance at a successful pregnancy. However, the downsides are that the evaluation process itself takes a long time and scientists may not always come to a general consensus. AI’s role here is to evaluate the embryo with higher accuracy using less time. Some results show AI reducing workflow time by 97.8%, and others report clinical pregnancy prediction accuracy of around 77% and implantation prediction accuracy of up to 92%. However, these numbers refer to the accuracy of predicting these outcomes, rather than directly increasing pregnancy or implantation rates. Some recent studies also found that AI did not significantly improve clinical pregnancy or live birth rates compared to traditional embryo evaluation. Therefore, the increase in accuracy and decrease in workflow time achieved through AI use indicate potential improvements over evaluations by human scientists.

Despite AI embryo evaluation achieving overall success in multiple studies, ethical challenges prevent any drastic changes to IVF regarding AI use. Training AI evaluators requires massive amounts of patient data, and such high-value data risks being leaked. Leaked patient data could cause detrimental damage to the medical industry alongside violating patients’ privacy.
In conclusion, AI embryo evaluation may have shown promising results, especially in prediction accuracy and efficiency, but many complications remain in the path towards widespread use of AI in IVF.
